Dubai: The Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award of $1 million was given to Sir Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web and Jimmy Wales, the founder of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia at the opening ceremony of the first Knowledge Conference in Dubai.

The conference, the first of its kind in the region, kicked off on Sunday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai hosting prominent knowledge influencers and experts from around the world.

Organised by the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation (MBRF) under the theme ‘Empowering Future Generations’, the conference was attended by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of MBRF.

Running until Tuesday, the conference will address some of the most critical issues related to knowledge transfer and localization through a variety of sessions with reference to the Arab Knowledge Report 2014.
