Dubai A 35-year-old Pakistani man, who has been under treatment for Crohn’s disease for 17 years, was in for a rude shock when he suddenly discovered he was suffering from an advanced stage of cancer.
Shaken and at a loss to pay for his costly treatment, Dubai-based Shahzad Zafar Ghazamfar Ali said it was unfortunate that the detection of cancer can still take a long time despite advances made in the field of science. He said he had visited multiple doctors over the years, but it was not until he was recently admitted to a public hospital that the diagnosis of the aggressive cancer came about following a series of tests.
No relief
“I had a lot of pain in the pelvic area and found it very difficult to walk. I went from one doctor to another but I did not get relief. Finally, I had to be admitted to hospital,” said Ali, who lives in Satwa.
A copy of the medical report from the public hospital where Ali stayed for 40 days confirms he suffers from “advanced stage 4 metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma (a malignant tumour that originates in epithelial cells on exocrine glands with mucous) and “lung metastatic lesions”.
Ali said he requires chemotherapy but is unable to pay for the treatment as he cannot afford it.
“I am in a lot of pain and need the chemotherapy. But I don’t know how I can get it done. I am praying for a miracle,” he said.
Pam Gouri, a social worker, said. “I have known Ali for 10 years and his concerns are genuine.”
