UAE University's Al Ain campus will have the world's largest centre for English-language proficiency tests at its General Requirements Unit.

The centre will allow students to take the International English-Language Testing System (IELTS), which has already been completed by 789 students in one sitting, as an essential part of the training.

"This was very nearly the largest single sitting of the exam ever done anywhere in the world," said Paul Jaquith, the IELTS administrator at the University General Requirements Unit.

By the end of next semester the UGRU will almost certainly be the largest peak volume centre in the world. The recent conduct of the test was only the third since the centre's inception, he said.

Considered the most sophisticated English-language proficiency test in the world, the IELTS test is a basic requirement for the students at the university.

The IELTS exam is managed and monitored by the University of Cambridge, the British Council and the International Development Programme by Education Australia.
