Dubai: Two tailors have denied the charge of stealing a purse from a 65-year-old Emirati housewife when she walked into their shop to buy textiles, but admitted eating her pastries, heard a court yesterday.

Prosecutors accused the tailors, 28-year-old Pakistani, S.M. and 23-year-old Afghan, I.S., of stealing the elderly woman's wallet containing Dh3,800.

"We didn't steal her wallet ... but she walked into our shop wanting to buying textiles then she walked out for few minutes to answer her mobile phone. She forgot her nylon sack on the shelf and we gave it back to her as soon as she returned," said S.M. when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

His alleged crime accomplice, I.S., also denied the charges before Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout. The housewife, A.S., testified that the incident happened at 7pm in Naif Souq.

"I bought a textile cloth for Dh100. I paid them Dh500 and then my mobile phone rang ... I left my wallet and a sack [containing pastries] on the shelf and walked out to attend the call. When I returned, I didn't find my wallet and the suspects were eating the pastries ... immediately I reported it to the police," she claimed.
