Abu Dhabi: An Indian family in the capital has the rare privilege to recite a gold-plated Quran around 500 years old during Ramadan.
Mohammad Haris, 41, who works with a bank in the capital, said the “Golden Tooling Quran” was gifted to his wife, Aishah Kassim, 38, by her brother, Ismail Bin Kassim, in Malaysia in 2009.
The gift was carried along with many documents that included an ownership certificate, permission to export it from Malaysia and the history of the Quran.
The documents said the Quran, in the Nashki script, is believed to date from between the 16th and 18th century.
It is believed that Arabs brought this rare Quran to China during the Ottoman Empire’s rule, before it was taken to Malaysia in 1971.
Haris said similar Qurans were sold on the international market for several million dollars.
His wife and children enjoy reciting the golden Quran during Ramadan.
