New Year long weekend in UAE: 13 free camping spots across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, RAK, UAQ, Sharjah and Fujairah

Residents are all set to celebrate the beginning of 2024 with a long weekend off from work (Dec 30 to Jan 1), and if you're not travelling, this marks the perfect opportunity for camping. We have compiled a list of popular camping sports - all promise amazing views, nice barbecue spots, crisp winter climes and a lot of fun for the entire family.

Head to Al Qudra for artificial lakes, surrounded by sand dunes that make a perfect backdrop for a selfie at sunset. Since it’s far from the hustle and bustle of the city, it also offers clear views of the stars. A barbeque under a star-lit sky is one for the bucket list.

Wadi Shawka: Whether you prefer a night or two camping or a day picnic, this Ras Al Khaimah valley is a great choice. Free to enter, you can set up tents here. The valley also has some nice hiking/trekking trails and may feature flowing streams depending on the season.

Suhaila Lake, Hatta: This new entrant to the list of camping locations in Dubai has great views and free entry for all. The spot is surrounded by nature and also offers amenities suited for overnight camping and additional activities at a cost.

For a scenic drive this weekend, get on the Masafi-Dibba road, where the landscape shifts from desert plains to rocky mountains. Whether you want to spend the day hiking, mountain biking, or just relaxing with a picnic, this is a spot you can truly enjoy.

Fujairah: This quiet emirate has a lot of hidden and off-the-beat gems for residents who love the outdoor experience. Fujairah also has a choice of quite beaches to try. Above: Al Jurouf, Fujairah.

Al Aqah Beach in Fujairah offers great views to The Gulf of Oman and there are nearby wadis and historic buildings, perfect for some exploring.

Camping on the shores of Umm Al Quwain brings with it a host of ocean adventure from swimming to kayaking and more. Carry your binoculars and keep your phone on camera mode – you are sure to see some beautiful birds while you are out there.

Want a no-frills experience? Pitch your tent at Jebel Jais Ras in Al Khaimah and set up your barbecue station. Wake up early to see the brilliant dawn break.

Al Wathba Lake Camp is a perfect destination to head to with kids. The ‘green’ destination offers breathtaking views and has 13 campsites around the lake, as well as 24 picnic sites. Families can enjoy recreational activities, including cycling and playing on the multiple volleyball courts and playgrounds at the venue.

Want an authentic desert experience? Head to Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Oasis. Rubh Al Khali, as it’s popularly known, is a frame of undulating dunes under a sparkling night sky. Just make sure you have a working GPS – getting lost here is very, very easy.

Hatta is home to glamping opportunities with great Insta-value. You could also set up your tent and enjoy the rocky terrain—things to do while here include looking at Hatta Dam and heading out for kayaking.

About an hour out of Sharjah, you’ll find a small town called Mleiha, which acts as a base for those looking to hike or camp. Look out for Fossil Rock - an archaeological site teeming with marine fossils.

Lahbab desert in Dubai: This popular camping destination is better known for star gazing, dune bashing and barbecue evenings, especially for new campers. The thrilling aspect of dune bashing here is the ‘Big Red’, a 300-foot high sand dune. If you’re brave of heart, head to the ‘ghost’ village Al Madam for a night of camping.
