Lebanese villagers have turned a traditional recipe into what could become the latest Guinness Book of Recordsentrant by making a 720-metre long sandwich.

The "Labneh," or strained yoghurt, sandwich was made Friday by more than 700 people from Kfar Qatra, a village 25km southeast of Beirut, village deputy mayor George Maalouf said yesterday.

Maalouf said the villagers used 3,500 loaves of Lebanese village bread, 140 kilos of Labneh, 21,000 olives, 280 kilos of tomatoes and cucumbers to make the giant sandwich.

The sandwich was cut into 14,260 pieces and distributed among attendees, including Guinness Book of Records representatives.

Maalouf said up until the Kfar Qatra record bid, the longest sandwich was one made in Italy five days ago, while the Guinness Book of Records web site lists a 322.5 metre sandwich made in 1979 in Peekskill Riverfront Green, New York, as the longest torpedo sandwich.
