Dubai: The major port at Saudi Arabia’s second largest city of Jeddah was closed on Tuesday due to bad weather, state-run Ekhbariya TV reported.

“Marine traffic was halted at Jeddah Islamic Port because of high winds and reduced visibility,” the channel wrote in a newsflash.

The Jeddah Islamic Port ranks 27th among the top 100 ports throughout the world, according to an official.

The Jeddah Islamic Port represents 59 per cent of the total volume of goods being handled at the Saudi ports.

The port's main advantage is its unique geographical position in the middle of the international navigation route between the East and the West in addition to its proximity to the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.
