Riyadh:  Saudi authorities will soon start distributing compensation for victims of the devastating flood that struck eastern and southern districts of Jeddah city in November 25 last year.

As many as 4,500 citizens will be beneficiaries of the compensation.

"Printed cheques are ready and they will be handed to the beneficiaries through the Civil Defence Department in the coming days. Formal announcement about the names of beneficiaries and the amount will be made shortly," according to well informed sources.

A total of 15 committees have been formed to assess the losses caused by the heavy rain and flash floods.

"The committees have almost finished their task of assessing the damages and their mission will be announced ended in the coming days," the sources said.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Abdullah Al Qarni, director of the media centre at the Department of Disaster Management in Jeddah Region, said the committees concluded that 10,751 properties were identified as damaged.

"The number of vehicles affected by the flood stood at 9,878, and these were assembled at 12 sites in the flood-hit districts," he said.

It was also found that the death toll in the devastating flood has reached 124 and some 32 people are still missing in the disaster.

"Ten bodies are yet to be identified while 111 bodies handed over to their families. One body of a Bangladeshi is still to be handed to his family," he said.

According to Brig. Gen. Al Qarni, compensation amounting to SR 1 million will be given to the families of each person, including foreigners, died in the floods as per the royal decree issued earlier.

"If more than one person died from the same family, the family will get compensation for each person," he added.
