Manama: Qatar has included traffic awareness programmes in its school curriculum to boost safety, a senior official of the Traffic Department has said.

"The department is working with the Supreme Education Council (SEC) to implement programmes and activities in the schools to raise awareness among students about traffic safety and traffic rules," Mubarak Al Nuaimi, head of the media and awareness section at the Department," said.

According to traffic authorities, youngsters' reckless driving has caused several major accidents and teenagers are the major victims of traffic accidents in Qatar.

The awareness programmes target both boys and girls and a series of lectures will also be held as part of the programme. A team of women volunteers have been trained to conduct the lectures in the girls’ schools.

Brochures and stickers focusing on traffic safety have been prepared for distribution and primary school students will be given tips on traffic safety, Al Nuaimi said.

"The programme is not just focused on children. Parents have the major responsibility for raising awareness among children about traffic safety and they will also be part of the school activities,” he said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.
