Manama: Qatar University's mechanical and industrial engineering department has designed an artificial cloud that might float over the stadiums to provide shadow and cool temperature during the World Cup football tournament to be held in Qatar in 2022.

Quoting Saud Abdul Gani, the head of the department, Qatari media said that the project would be implemented in collaboration with the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).

"We are in discussion with the QSTP about the costs and to create an initial model on a trial basis," Saud said, quoted by Gulf Times.

The clouds will be "manufactured" from light carbon materials and totally indigenous sources and will be propelled by four solar powered engines. They will fly at a very high altitude to serve as shields from the direct and indirect sunrays and thereby help in controlling the temperature.

Abdul Gani said that the costs for manufacturing the initial model could be around $500,000, but will come down considerably when produced on a commercial scale.
