Muscat: Wives of detained activists have taken to social media with an appeal to Omani authorities, in particular the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Khawla, wife of poet-activist Saeed Al Hashemi has posted an open letter on her Facebook account, urging the NHRC to intervene and end Al Hashemi’s alleged solitary confinement.

According to her Al Hashemi was placed in solitary confinement for leading the hunger strike by 18 inmates, spending time in jail for wrongful gathering at a public place or violating the country’s cyber laws as well as insulting Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed on the internet.

In her appeal, also addressed to the President of the Supreme Court and Inspector General of Police and Customs, Khawla says that she is not asking for any “exceptional favour” but would like NHRC to promptly end Al Hashemi’s solitary confinement and treat him as the other prisoners.

According to Arabic portal Al Balad, Lamia, the wife of Khalid Al Nofli, has also made a similar appeal through her Facebook account. She has brought the NHRC’s attention to the reasons for the 18 inmates resorting to a hunger strike and asked them to resolve the issue.
