Muscat: Two citizens in Al Musannah in northern Oman were arrested by police when they tried to buy a mobile phone card with fake currency.

Police said the shopkeeper contacted police when the two men approached him and asked for a prepaid card worth three Omani riyals and handed him a 50 riyal note, which he found to be fake.

He immediately reported the case, Al Musannah police said.

Meanwhile, an expatriate was arrested for attempting to change 10 $100 notes into riyals at a money exchange in Al Khod district of Muscat.

The cashier discovered that the American cash was forged and contacted Al Khoud police station.

In another case of attempts to use fake currency, police said two residents paid 20 riyals in cash to buy beverages but hotel staff identified the currency as fake, and reported the pair to police, who arrested them.
