Manama: Kuwait is intensifying its drive to check speeding cars by installing new smart cameras.

According to the traffic department, the cameras will help identify speeders who slow down when they approach a camera and then speed after they pass it.

The new cameras are able to snap those speeders, despite their attempts to circumvent the system, since they are programmed to measure the time the vehicle spends between two points.

Speed and non-compliance with traffic rules have been a serious problem in Kuwait despite efforts by the authorities to tackle it.

On Sunday, four young Kuwaitis died in various accidents and five were seriously injured.

According to Kuwaiti media, 30 people were killed in Kuwait in November, an average of one death every day.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said that road accidents in Kuwait are the third cause of death and injury and is the number one cause of death among youths.
