Manama: Couples planning to get married in Kuwait will undergo psychological, social and legal training courses before their wedding if a proposal by a Kuwaiti organization is approved by the parliament.

The Kuwait Charity for Family Development said that it would soon submit a proposal to the parliament to make it mandatory for couples planning to get married to have psychological, social and legal training.

Pre-marriage medical tests

The requirement would be on the same lines as the mandatory pre-marriage medical tests, Kuwaiti daily Al Watan reported, quoting Mohammad Abdullah Al Hajji, head of the charity organisaton.

The idea was conceptualised amid alarming reports about the rising divorce rate in the country and the decreasing number of youths keen on getting married, he said.

"The training courses will help couples who intend to get married to plan it all at the start," he said.

No longer interested in married life

Many youths are no longer interested in married life due to the negative experiences of the people around them.

Kuwait has one of the highest divorce rates in the region, reaching according to Kuwaiti reports around 50 per cent in recent years.

Al Hajji said that the organisation had finalized procedures to obtain a license to establish a family development re that will help couples who want to get married start a family. The centre will also help reinforce the family institution in Kuwait.
