Abu Dhabi: Two people were killed and 15 injured in separate fog-related road accidents in the capital on Sunday, police said.
Two people were killed in a pile-up involving 18 vehicles on the Tarif-Abu Dhabi road near the Hamim bridge, which left two people severely injured and nine with minor injuries. Wreckage was scattered for a quarter of a mile.
All the injured were rushed to Al Mafraq hospital. Those with minor injuries were discharged after being administered first aid.
"The chain-reaction collision began when a vehicle exited the highway without paying attention to traffic in the adjacent lane," Brigadier Hussain Ahmad Al Harthy, Director of Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Department, said.
Multi-vehicle accidents were also reported near the Al Inmaa bridge, Maqta bridge and Umm Al Nar bridge due to poor visibility and heavy fog at dawn.
Abu Dhabi Police issued a weather warning and implemented measures to reduce the occurrence of accidents. "Trucks will no longer be allowed on the highways during fog," Brigadier Al Harthy said.
He advised motorists to take simple precautions when driving in fog, such as switching on hazard or fog lights, driving slowly and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
