Dubai: A large plume of smoke drifted over the Al Quoz industrial area yesterday as firefighters battled a stubborn blaze in a wood workshop and warehouse, confirmed Dubai Civil Defence officials.

The black billowing smoke could be seen for kilometres due to the fire’s intensity that was attributed to a large quantity of wood material inside the burning facility that fuelled the fire for at least four hours until fire officials were able to douse the blaze, said officials.

No fatalities or injuries were reported from the fire that was brought under control around 2.45pm, said officials.

Civil Defence officials said that the fire was difficult to extinguish quickly given the wood in the building.

The cause of the fire is being probed.

“The reason behind the fire is to be known after the Dubai Police forensic laboratory finishes the investigation,” an official told Gulf News yesterday.

According to the Dubai Civil Defence, the fire was reported at 11am and was difficult to extinguish as it started in the furniture warehouse portion of the facility that was not identified by authorities yesterday.

No damage estimate was available by authorities who said financial losses are still being assessed.

The fire also reached some goods of the same warehouse, which were kept outside the warehouse, Civil Defence said.
