As many as 46 old school buildings in Dubai and the northern emirates need to be demolished and replaced, according to a report from the Ministry of Education.

The school buildings were built in the '70s and '80s and the structures have served their expected life.

More than Dh500 million is needed to build new facilities at these schools, according to the report.

Ali Al Suwaidi, assistant undersecretary for human resources, planning and development at the Ministry, told Gulf News the ministry has an investment programme concerning school buildings to be applied every year.

"Under this programme we have two systems for school buildings: the first one is 'substitution', where we substitute an old school by building another one under the same name. The second system is called 'expansion' under which school buildings are expanded based on the needs of the area."

The 46 schools set to be demolished include 15 in Ras Al Khaimah, 9 in Fujairah, 8 in Dubai, 6 in Sharjah, 4 in Ajman and 2 in Umm Al Quwain.
