Dubai: Natural desert areas are being spruced up by special cleaning teams in readiness for a spike in visitors during the winter months, said municipal officials on Tuesday.

As part of maintaining the general cleanliness of desert areas, the municipality has despatched crews made up of 35 workers to conduct a clean-up operation.

According to waste management department officials, the desert restoration operation comes just as the cooler winter season is drawing near.

The season will witness a spike in the number of visitors exploring remote desert areas. Cooler temperatures will also mark the beginning of the camping season across the UAE.

Abdul Majeed Saifaie, director of the waste management department, said: “As the winter season has started, a good number of people are going to desert areas. Also, as the civic body has started issuing winter camp permits the possibility of rubbish increasing in the desert areas is high.”

He said his department has arranged a comprehensive plan to collect waste from desert areas, including campsites.

According to the plan, workers will patrol the areas to collect waste, he said.

He said extra waste containers have been placed and instructions have been displayed to ensure that cleanliness is maintained.

Visitors are asked not to leave the remnants of fires in desert areas.
