Dubai: A manager claimed that he was suffering from psychosis after his girlfriend dumped him. He admitted in court on Sunday that he threatened to shame her brother over the payment of a sum she owed him.

The 30-year-old Indian manager, N.C., was said to have threatened to humiliate his countryman and his family by publishing discourteous posts on Facebook claiming that he raped his sister if he didn’t repay his Dh22,000 between 2013 and 2014. Prosecutors charged N.C. with threatening to discredit the brother on social media, coercing him to pay Dh22,000 and publishing slanderous material via email and his personal page on Facebook.

“The claimant’s sister and I were having a love affair in 2011, during which I lent her Dh22,000. Then she broke up with me, after which I suffered a severe depression. I texted the claimant and threatened him because I wanted my money back,” said N.C. when he entered a guilty plea before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

“Why did you threaten him? Did he give you the money?” Presiding Judge Fahd Al Shamsi asked the defendant in courtroom seven.

“I was feeling down after the breakup. She left me and she left town also. A year passed and nothing happened. I became psychotic and used to drive around the city in a state of depression. When I threatened him, I was depressed and under medication,” replied the defendant.

The Indian brother testified to prosecutors that he and his family received emails in which the sender [N.C.] claimed that he had raped his sister.

“The suspect also mentioned in the email that my mother was alcoholic. He also threatened to spread those rumours amongst my relatives and friends. He also sent the same offensive messages on WhatsApp and Facebook. I reported the matter to the police,” claimed the brother.

Presiding Judge Al Shamsi authorised the defendant to submit his written defence and medical documents confirming that he suffered from psychosis before handing out a judgement on May 13.
