Abu Dhabi: A total of 1,274 people were arrested and over 600 kilograms of banned drugs seized in the first half of the year in Abu Dhabi, police said on Tuesday.
During the period, the police confiscated 640,000 captagon capsules and 57kg of hashish.
The seized drugs contained different kinds of banned substances prohibited by law to import, promote, trade and consume in the UAE.
Brigadier Mohammad Suhail Al Rasheedi, acting director of Criminal Security Sector of the police, said, “The police arrested 1,274 people who were accused of promoting and consuming drugs in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. During the period, the police also busted gangs of drug peddlers who were operating from outside the country.”
The seized amounts of drugs indicate the positive effect of the police’s efforts in limiting the promotion of drugs in society and arresting its peddlers.
Brig Al Rasheedi said drug consumption is a global problem. There are many reasons that lead to drug promotion and abuse such as weak religious understanding and family disintegration.
The family has to play a vital role in building personalities of their sons and preventing them from taking to drug abuse, he said. Brig Al Rasheedi urged the community to cement cooperation with the police in combating the menace of drugs and its promotion among youth.
