Dubai: Planning to sell your vehicle soon after you renewed the registration and insurance? You can apply for an insurance refund certificate with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai – if your vehicle is registered in the emirate – to get a refund on the insurance amount, based on the remaining period of the policy.

In May this year, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that it would be shifting certain vehicle and licensing services to smart platforms, and these would only be available through the RTA’s website, app or through its hotline – 800 9090. One of these services is providing the Insurance Refund Certificate to car owners in the emirate. What is this certificate and how can you apply for one? Here is all you need to know.

What is the Insurance Refund Certificate?

If the ownership of the car is changing or if the vehicle is disposed of for any other reason, you may want to get a refund on the vehicle’s insurance. With comprehensive insurance policies costing upwards of Dh2,000 a year, if you have a few months left on your insurance policy, applying for a refund would make financial sense.

Which documents do you need?

As an individual customer (as opposed to a company), you would need to provide the following documents:

• Original Emirates ID to update the information.

• Document stating the data of the vehicle.

How much does the service cost?

The total cost is Dh120 (Dh100 + Dh20 Knowledge and Innovation fees)

How can I apply?

The certificate can be applied for through the following platforms:

1. RTA website – www.rta.ae

2. ‘Dubai Drive’ smartphone application

3. RTA call centre – 800 9090

To apply for the insurance refund certificate on the website, follow these steps:

Step 1: Log in to your account

If you do not have an RTA account already, visit www.rta.ae and under the ‘Login’ option on the top right hand corner, select ‘Create an account’.

Click on ‘Register as an individual user’. You will then be asked to set up a username and password and provide details like your full name, nationality and contact details. Once you confirm the details your account will be created.

Log in to your account using the username and password that you have set.

You can also link your UAE Pass account with your RTA account.

Step 2: Select the Insurance Refund Certificate service

Once you have logged in, you will see a dashboard. Select ‘Licensing services’ and you will be redirected to the RTA eServices page. You would need to select ‘Insurance Refund Certificate’ from the list of licensing services.

Step 3: Provide your insurance policy details

You will then be asked to provide details like the name of your insurance provider, the policy number and the chassis number of your vehicle. Confirm whether you wish to receive the certificate through email, via a courier or by collecting it from an RTA customer happiness centre.

Once you receive the insurance refund certificate, you can submit this to your insurance provider, who will then return your remaining premium, calculated on a pro rata basis.
