The acid secreted from the stomach is essential in the digestive process, as it helps in breaking down the food. But when there is excess production of acid by the gastric glands, it results in acidity — which is responsible for dyspepsia (indigestion), heartburn and the formation of ulcers (erosion of the lining of the stomach or intestines). Highly emotional and nervous individuals are more inclined to this condition.

A lifestyle which includes a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, plenty of water, proper sleep and regular exercise can help eliminate this condition. The yoga practice described below is beneficial when done on a regular basis.

Kunjal Kriya

A yogic purification technique, Kunjal Kriya helps in cleansing the body from inside. Prepare about two litres of lukewarm (body temperature) water, adding one teaspoonful of salt per litre. Drink at least six glasses of the preparation as quickly as possible, until your stomach is full. It is important to drink fast and not sip the water.

When the stomach is full, the urge to vomit will be felt naturally. Lean forward, keeping the trunk as horizontal as possible over a sink. Open the mouth and place the middle and index fingers of the right hand as far back on the tongue as possible. Gently rub and press the back of the tongue. This should induce the water to gush out from the stomach.

The more the practitioner relaxes into the practice, the easier it will be to do. During the expulsion of water the fingers can be removed from the mouth. When the flow of water ceases, repeat the process. Continue until the stomach is empty.

Some people may not be able to bring up the water initially. In that situation, the water in the stomach will simply pass through the system in the normal way. The expelled water may appear discoloured, especially on the first few attempts. This can be caused by fermented food particles, bile or mucus from the stomach. But once the stomach is clean, the water will become clear.

Benefits

Helps in indigestion, gas and bloating.

Removal of excess mucus helps remedy cough and cold, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.

Helps eradicate bad breath.

Gives a healthy glow to the skin.

Helps in the release of pent-up emotions and emotional blocks or feelings, which could have been caused by inner and external conflicts and pressures.

Contra-indications: This practice should not be performed by people suffering from hernia, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, acute peptic ulcer or diabetics with eye problems.

Note: When the vomiting reflex ceases to bring up any water, stop the technique as it indicates that the stomach is empty. This technique removes some of the stomach lining, leaving it temporarily vulnerable. For this reason it is advised not to eat until half an hour after completion of the exercise.

Kunjal can be performed once a week preferably first thing in the morning. Seek the guidance of a professional before continuing it on your own.
