In celebration of World Space Week, we’ve put together a list of the best space movies out there to help you get in the intergalactic spirit. Whether you choose to binge watch all in one day, or spread them out over the week, here is our list of favourite space movies to get you excited about the vastness of our universe.

1. 2001Space Odyssey

This epic science fiction film follows a voyage to Jupiter with a humanlike sentient computer named Hal, after a team of scientists discover a mysterious black structure in space that is affecting the evolution of the humans. The film is praised for being one of the most realistic depiction of space travel. It is a classic.

2. Gravity

Released in 2013, this visually astounding film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Bullock’s character Ryan Stone is left alone in space to fend for herself and has to manoeuvre the terrifying loneliness of being lost alone in space and of course screaming with no one to hear you.

3. Star Wars

Why not just binge watch all of the Star Wars movies in celebration of World Space Week. The beloved characters, the spaceships and the galaxy far far away. We love them all.

4.  Apollo 13

This oldie, which was released in 1995 is a based on a true story about three men trapped in space and are running out of oxygen. This dramatic science fiction thriller was directed by Ron Howard is totally factual and follows the true story properly.

5. Interstellar

Everyone who has watched this film, has left the movie theatre in awe. Interstellar is a star studded movie directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine. The story follows a group of astronauts, who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.

6. WALL- E

WALL-E is the acronym for ‘Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class’ and he is the last and cutest robot left on Earth. Basically all he does is pass the time cleaning up the planet, one piece of garbage at a time. After 700 years, the little guy starts to develop a personality and begins to feel real emotions, like loneliness. One day, during his usual clean-up he discovers EVE, a probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. With EVE, WALL-E begins a whole new adventure.

7. Star Trek Beyond

This blockbuster is full of some great stars and a very exciting plot. When the Starship Enterprise is attacked in outer space, they are forced to land on a mysterious planet. The team finds out that Krall an evil lizard-like mastermind is in search of a valuable relic that’s in the ship. The Enterprise crew are now stranded on a strange planet and need to battle Lark to stop him from getting his hands on the artefact on their ship.
