It was July 2019 when BMW showed us what a future BMW pickup truck could look like, using the large platform of the X7 SUV - but they could have made the bed bigger to make it more practical - it just about fits a motorbike back there... Image Credit: Supplied

Pickup trucks don’t just look awesome, they are extremely useful for hauling heavy loads in the bed but you don't need to be a cattle rancher to enjoy the benefits of these rugged machines – in fact it is more common to see these giants of the road parked by fancy hotels rather than worksites. Still, they are ever so practical and when BMW unveiled its X7 Pickup back in July, it looked interesting to say the least.

It is not destined to hit the production line which means this won’t be a rival to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class; it was built just for show purposes which is a shame as it is easily the most interesting vehicle the German carmaker has made in recent years. However, there seems to be a bit of a problem with it…

Currently on show at BMW Welt next to the company’s headquarters in Munich, the truck – based on the X7 - features a bigger interior than most other trucks but the trade-off of the larger cabin is that the size of the bed has had to be kept so short that it can’t even fit a motorbike in the back of it!

We like the handcrafted loading area boasting a sophisticated fine-polished wood finish - but wish it could have been a bit bigger! Anyway, this X7 Pickup is not destined for production, it is for show purposes only. Image Credit: Supplied

Pictured squashed in the bed of the X7 Pickup is a BMW F 850 GS motorcycle – and as you can see, about half of it is jutting out and even the tailgate has been kept open to support the bike’s rear wheel.

Suffice to say if this was a production vehicle, then owners would be wondering where all the practicality of a truck has gone…
