George Town: A 5.8 earthquake has struck near the Cayman Islands, but no damage or injuries have been reported.

The government says it received 100 emergency calls, mostly from people who wanted to know whether an earthquake really did occur.

Emergency Communications Center Manager Brent Finster says some callers had evacuated buildings and wondered if it was safe to go back inside.

Tuesday's earthquake slightly disrupted telephone service.

It occurred at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers) in the Caribbean Sea and 32 miles (52 kilometres) east-southeast of the capital of George Town.

It occurred exactly a week after a 7.0 earthquake killed an estimated 200,000 people in Haiti.

Finster said there is no threat of a tsunami.
