Cairo: Ahmad Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak's last premier, was mobbed by an angry crowd at a polling station on the outskirts of Cairo, local media reported.
Shafiq, an ex-army general, was attacked by verbal abuses and shoes thrown at him as he emerged from the polling station Wednesday evening in the New Cairo area, added the media.
He was whisked unharmed into his car.
Recent opinion polls have shown Shafiq, 70, leading among 12 other contenders in Egypt's first presidential election since Mubarak's overthrow in February last year.
Shafiq's opponents accuse him of being an extension of the Mubarak regime and have threatened a "second revolution" if he becomes a president.
Polling stations across Egypt's 27 governorates are to open Thursday for the second day of the vote until 8pm (1800 GMT). A likely run-off is scheduled for June 16-17
