Washington: Israel's Deputy Prime Minister has demanded the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog be sacked.

Shaul Mofaz said Mohammad Al Baredi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had neglected Iran's nuclear programme.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Mofaz said: "The policies followed by Al Baradei endanger world peace. His irresponsible attitude of sticking his head in the sand over Iran's nuclear programme should lead to his impeachment.''

Iran has always denied that it is seeking nuclear weapons, claiming that it is pursuing nuclear technology for generating electricity.

Al Baredi has said Iran's nuclear programme was years away from being able to build a nuclear bomb, even if it wanted to.
