Cairo: A Saudi man has been arrested after he had shot and seriously injured a doctor, Saudi media reported Thursday.

The suspect had fired at the doctor in a parking area outside a hospital where the latter works in the region of Al Jouf in northern Saudi Arabia, local health authorities.

The victim was hospitalised and is reported to be in critical condition. The motive for the attack is not clear yet.

The suspect, a Saudi citizen in his 50s, had been arrested and the gun used in the attack seized, spokesman for Al Jouf police Yazid Al Numes said.

The Health Ministry has said that verbal or physical attacks on medical practitioner is a crime punishable by jailing for up to 10 years and a maximum fine of SR1 million.
