The number of fatalities on Qatar's roads has decreased to 217 in 2009 from 230 in 2008.

The interior ministry attributes the drop to the application of the new traffic law that came into effect in 2007.

According to the data released by the interior ministry, Qatar had a 28.8 percent drop in traffic violations in 2008 over the previous year "despite a considerable increase in the number of vehicles and the population."

The number of traffic accidents in 2008 was 3,414, a decrease by 28.6 percent over the 2007 figures.

Qatar's registered vehicles increased by 19.2 per cent in 2008, reaching a record figure of 641,786, while the total number of drivers in 2008 was 680,843, an increase of 16.1 percent over 2007, the Peninsula reported on Wednesday.

Traffic officials said that intensive traffic awareness campaigns across the country have helped reduce traffic violations and accidents and boosted commuters' alertness.
