Muscat - Through a series of tweets today, Oman's Royal Oman Police, Traffic division, informed the general public of the repercussions of excessive speed and reckless driving.

The tweet quoting Oman's traffic law stated that excessive speed is a major cause of many serious traffic accidents. Whoever drives a vehicle recklessly shall be punished by imprisonment for a period not less than ten days and not exceeding two months. A fine not less than RO 100 and not more than RO500 depending on the severity of the case will be slapped on the speedsters.

Another notable offence of failing to clean the vehicle or misplacing the number plates, are also serious traffic violations that attract fines. "A vehicle seized while driving without a license (number) plate, or bearing the number plate of another vehicle or if the same is found to be fake or stolen, will be subject to fines and penalties as per Oman's traffic law.

In Oman using the handset (phone) while driving is considered a serious offence, which is punishable by law.

As per the data report shared recently by National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) Oman, Oman over the last five years has seen massive reduction in the number of road accidents. The report also indicated that Oman has in the past five years witnessed a significant development in high traffic safety awareness. The data reported a 66 per cent decline in road accidents between 2015 and 2019.
