Muscat: An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude was reported 340km away from Khasab, in southern Iran at 7.36am local time today, a tweet shared by the Earthquake Monitoring Centre at Sultan Qaboos University informed. The Twitter handle @emcsquoman also mentioned an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude that happened six days back on August 25, in the Arabian Sea, approximately 570km away from Salalah at 11.15am local time.
Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) is a national Omani research centre located in Sultan Qaboos University, established in 2001 to record earthquakes locally, regionally and internationally. The EMC receives real time data from remote seismic stations to analyse the data, locates the event and stores the parametres in the Oman Seismological Network database.
The seismic monitoring centre at Sultan Qaboos University is one of the oldest research centres established at the university, which was started in the mid-1990s.
