Manama: A Kuwaiti writer was on Monday sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly offending Shiites on social networks.
The criminal court found Mohammad Al Mulaifi guilty of the charges of insulting a segment of the Kuwaiti society by claiming that they had allegiance to other countries based on their historic backgrounds and religious beliefs.
Al Mulaifi was also charged with denigrating the Shiite sect, disseminating false information and attacking a lawmaker.
Legal action by the government was in February urged against Al Mulaifi by several Shiite MPs and citizens who accused him of undermining social peace and instigating internal conflicts.
“Everyone should know that doctrines are red lines and whoever crosses them will cause internal strife that may have a negative impact on the country and weaken national unity,” MP Saleh Ashour said.
