Manama: A Kuwaiti national team squash player has died allegedly after drinking four cans of an energy drink.

Nasser Al Rashed, a 21-year-old player with Kadhima Club, died on Wednesday after he suffered a heart attack, the local media reported.

He is well respected in Kuwait for winning several national championships.

His death is set to cause a new controversy in a country where energy drinks are highly popular, mainly among young people.

Several groups have called for a ban on the sale and consumption of energy drinks following the death of a 16-year-old boy earlier this year after he consumed them.

His death sparked an online media campaign that warned against the energy drinks, regardless of their brands.

Mubarak Al Harbi, a lawyer, filed a legal case against a health ministry official to end the import of energy drinks, claiming that they were a high life risk.
