Cairo: The Kuwaiti army Tuesday denied reports that a military facility was attacked on the border with Iraq.

The denial came after Reuters, citing Iraqi security sources, reported that an explosion had targeted a convoy carrying equipment for US troops near the Jraischan border crossing at the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border Monday evening.

“The General Headquarters of the Army denies reports circulated by different media about a subversive attack on one of the centres on the northern Kuwaiti border,” the army said, according to the official Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.

The Kuwaiti army added that the country’s border with Iraq is “stable and secure”.

The self-styled Iraqi militia group “People of the Cave”, believed to be allied with Iran, claimed the reported attack, alleging it resulted in destroying a large number of US vehicles.

In recent months, tensions have mounted between Iraq’s pro-Iran Shiite militias and the US after American air strikes killed a top Iranian commander and a leading Iraqi militiaman in Baghdad last January.

The strikes triggered Iraqi calls for the withdrawal of US forces, which are in the country as part of an international military alliance fighting the terrorist Daesh group.
