Manama: A Bahraini court on Wednesday postponed the trial of five policemen in a torture-linked death case to January 30 to appoint lawyers.
The five policemen are being tried for their alleged role in the death of two detainees.
Two were charged with causing their death while the other three were detained after they failed to report that the death resulted from abuse. Bahrain has pledged to put on trial members of the police who were involved in the death and abuses of detainees.
A searing report by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), an international fact-finding panel that investigated the events that hit Bahrain in February and March and their consequences, had put the government, the opposition and protestors to task over missed opportunities, incidents and deaths.
The government acknowledged the report and pledged to implement its recommendations under the close supervision of the National Commission set up by King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa.
The opposition has not publicly accepted the report.The interior ministry has launched a series of reforms that included brining in an American and a British experts to help push through human rights-friendly changes. Several ministry officers and service members have been referred to the public prosecution to enable it look into charges of abuses brought against them by protestors and the families of victims.
