On the eve of Pakistan's 75th Independence Day, Pakistan wore a festive look and people, despite COVID-19 challenge, are already celebrating the day by putting on white clothes with green stickers on them — colours of the national flag — decorating their houses, buildings with flags, leaflets and portraits of the founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

This national spirit is rejuvenated with the recent performance of two Pakistani athletes at the Tokyo Olympics Arshad Nadeem and Talha Talib.

Arshad Nadeem made his presence felt by finishing fifth in men’s javelin throw event. For many Pakistanis, though he did not secure the medal yet he won hearts of the nation.

A day earlier on Thursday, Arshad Nadeem received a hero’s welcome upon return to Pakistan and arrival at his hometown Mian Channu. A Pakistani TV anchor Waqar Zaka while receiving him at the airport in Lahore presented PKR1 million (Dh22,340) as token of appreciation.

Performance by Talha Talib, a weight lifter from Gujranwala, who also narrowly missed a medal in Tokyo Olympics also made the nation proud.

The third name in the hall of fame is Shehroz Kashif, Pakistan’s mountaineer who achieved the title of the youngest mountaineer of the world by scaling K2 in July also served to boost the national pride.

Senate, Punjab govt to honour Pakistani athletes

A Senate committee has also decided to honour Arshad Nadeem and Talha Talib, while the Punjab government has also announced cash rewards of Rs1 million for Nadeem, Talib and mountaineer Shehroz Kashif for their recent stellar performances at the global level.

The netizens too, while expressing their faith in the country on the Independence Day are also posting pictures and screenshots showing their achievements on the social media.

At the government level, exhibitions, flag-hoisting ceremonies, seminars and change of guards at the mausoleums of the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Poet of the East Allama Iqbal marked the Independence Day celebrations.

A large number of families in Karachi and Lahore are visiting the Mazar-e-Quaid and the Mazar-e-Iqbal to pay their respects and offer Fateha on the Independence Day.
