Dubai: Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi hugged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian Twitterati is on a roll. A video that went viral shows what happened after Gandhi’s passionate speech during #NoConfidenceMotion debate in the ongoing monsoon session of the Indian Parliament on Friday.

In a bid to show that the Congress party is against hatred of any kind, Gandhi walked across the floor and surprised the PM with a hug.

A shocked Modi, a few seconds later called Gandhi as he was returning and patted him on the back.

According to journalist @RanaAyyub, it was the “most awkward day in Indian parliament”.

The hug was later dubbed #JadduKiJhappi, which translates to ‘magical hug’.

Some tweeps and leaders praised Gandhi. Politician @yadavtejashwi tweeted: “Oh that wink my friend! Hit them hard where it hurts. Congratulations for unearthing their mines of lies and a fantastic speech @RahulGandhi.”

Others felt this an unnecessary show and was beyond parliament’s decorum .

Like many others @bhupendrachaube tweeted: “Parliament is now officially the biggest reality television show in India. @RahulGandhi doing #JadooKiJhappi with @narendramodi... is completely against spirit of parliamentary democracy and norms.”

To this, some tweeps said a hug was better than hatred and mob lynchings that were growing in the country courtesy BJP.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, @OmarAbdullah: “Hugs are against Parliamentary democracy and norms? Here’s a hug for you too.”

And @nihang replied: “In a country where lynching has become the norm, a hug is against spirit of democracy!”

Some, however, continue to feel that Rahul Gandhi does not have what it takes to lead a country.

@1998Karan02: “Rahul is a joke and he is the biggest reason for downfall of opposition, stop giving him importance.”

Prior to the hug though, the Congress president, in the debate on a no-confidence motion against the BJP government, pointed out the misdemeanours in the governance by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

The Congress president also accused the government of mob lynchings, communal violence and polarisation in the country. He blamed BJP for shunning minorities and undermining the constitution of the country.

On Friday hashtag #NoConfidenceMotion and #RahulGandhi remained in the top trends in the country.

News Agency Asian News International (@ANI), in a tweet, quoted Union minister Rajnath Singh as saying: “After 15 years, a #NoConfidenceMotion has been moved against a govt. We never moved a no-confidence motion in ten years when Congress was in power because we understood that the Congress had people’s mandate.”
