In my opinion there are three reasons for reckless driving, the first being making phone calls, or texting while driving, which can be very distracting. Secondly, people assume that it’s safe to speed down an empty road, when really nothing can be more dangerous. Lastly the lack of experience and confidence, if you have experience but not the confidence then slow down.

Leading a fast life is a reason, it means that everything is rushed and must be done in a hurry. And then you get people using phones while driving, can we blame them really? We live in a world where we need to be ‘connected’ 24/7. We have this urge to respond to messages instantly while driving. And that causes loss of concentration, which leads to accidents.

You feel like drivers act like teenagers, they show off their driving skills amongst themselves, which encourages them to drive recklessly on the streets. Not paying attention, using your phone and not caring for safety....

As from my own experience, I’ve seen a lot of racing along the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway, especially in the afternoon and at night. They just rush, you’ll find two cars will be racing, and changing the lanes quickly, too quickly. They start competing, and ignore road signs, they’d drive so fast it looks as though they’re about to crash into other cars. Secondly to cover time, people drive fast, they’re already late, they start late and they want to arrive on time.

Speeding is looked upon by some individuals, especially youngsters of today, as a way to make some sort of a mark on the roads. They have fast cars, and want to show them off. Mismanagement of time - it is okay for people to leave the house 10 minutes later, and speed on the road to reach their destination, instead of leaving five minutes earlier and traveling at speeds specified for the relevant roads. The same situation leads to accidents as well, when somebody wishes to jump a signal to avoid spending two minutes at the junction. As a new driver, I was always instructed to prepare myself for the risks and hazards on the road. No indicator signs while changing lanes, unnecessary overtaking, are classic examples of reckless driving.

The first thing about road safety that comes to mind is drink driving, speeding, not following the driving limits, using the phone while driving, sometimes even when the person is using a headset while making a phone call, the person is distracted.

Some people drink and drive. I know some people drive fast. If a woman was about to give birth or in case of emergencies, I’d rather call an ambulance. I don’t think it’s acceptable to speed on the road because you put yourself in danger and everybody else.

You can have a licencing system, wherein the engine size is restricted when you get your licence. So between 18 and 21 they can drive a smaller engine, it would restrict them, and then they would get their experience, P for provisional.
