The parents of a 25-day-old infant born without kidneys, ureter or bladder are hoping for a second miracle after their baby has survived for more than the ten days doctors predicted. The Egyptian infant, Mahmud, was born at Saqr Hospital on June 3 without a urinary system.

Against all odds and doctors' prognostications, the infant has survived, having spent the first ten days of his life in the hospital.
After conducting extensive tests, the doctors told the parents their child would live for just ten days as his body was unable to expel wastes. Doctors said this was the strangest case they had come across.

Against all odds and doctors' prognostications, the infant has survived, having spent the first ten days of his life in the hospital.

"His survival for the 10 days created hope in me and his mother and on the 11th day we decided to take him to another hospital for a second medical opinion," said Mohammed Saleh, the father of the child, who works for a restaurant here.

They took their child to Al Wasl Hospital in Dubai, where a CT scan was done that only confirmed the opinion of the doctors at Saqr Hospital. The doctors here, too, concluded that the infant could not survive without a urinary system, nor could he withstand the strain of surgery or be administered anaesthesia.

Mahmud's medical condition came as a rude shock to his parents who have a healthy two-year-old son, the father said.

He said the infant's survival is nothing short of miraculous and that he is doing just fine.

The first 15 days of Mahmud's life were an extremely anxious and tense period for his parents, who expected him to die. As the days pass, however, there is hope that he will somehow pull through.

To provide Mahmud with the best medical care, he has been re-admitted to Saqr Hospital to be monitored by a team of specialists.

The only hope was to send him abroad for more medical tests, but the financial realities will not allow this luxury, he said.
