Dubai: An Asian man was killed after being run over on Al Khaleej Road in Dubai.

Major Khalifa Ali Rashid, Head of the traffic section at Al Muraqqabat police station, said that they received a call from the operations room about the incident.

“The man was crossing from a pedestrian crossing, but the traffic light for pedestrians was red at that moment, and he was knocked down by a car,” he said.

Dubai Police have been intensifying its campaign to fine people crossing from undesignated areas.

Since the beginning of 2016, Al Muraqqabat police station has fined 2,000 jaywalkers in its area of jurisdiction.

In 2015, it had fined 4,583 people for the same.

People should pick the right point to cross the road from, Major Ali Rashid said, and look left and right to ensure there is no traffic before crossing.

Pedestrians must avoid reading and using mobile phones while crossing the road, and must make sure the crossing light is green.
