Ras Al Khaimah: Hundreds of jellyfish have landed on Ras Al Khaimah shores forcing the authorities to issue warnings to visitors and swimmers in the area.

A senior official from the emirate's Agricultural Department said the jellyfish covered the shores mainly at Shaam, Ghaleelah and Al Jeer. He added that it was their usual season.

Most of the jellyfish were brought ashore by fishing nets, he said.

Jellyfish are not harmful but the public should be alert and choose safer waters, the official said.

The official stressed that the jellyfish usually die under the sun on the shores and the hotter the sun, the faster the jellyfish die, adding that a jellyfish would take about two days to die under the sun.

Fishermen who netted the jellyfish said they are getting less fish because of large hauls of jellyfish.

Saleh Hanbalou, a veteran national fisherman from Al Rams in RAK, said the common white jellyfish will continue to remain closer to the shores till the beginning of June. He added that human skin is usually sensitive to the creatures.

A reddish white variety of jellyfish, locally known as 'doll jellyfish', appear during June and July and are much more harmful than those currently landing up on the shores.
