Dubai: A smartphone application by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has been deemed a success with close to 500 downloads barely into its launch a few weeks ago at Gitex, according to a senior official from the Authority.
Through this, users have access to health information at any time, place or platform, said Mubaraka Mubarak Al Ebrahim, director of Information Technology at DHA, speaking to Gulf News about the new mobile application as well as the motion technology concept that is currently being developed.
“The response at Gitex was excellent,” she said.
Mubaraka explained that the app, inspired by Windows 8, is compatible with all platforms — Apple iOS, Google Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile, among others.
The DHA app provides a plethora of services including a list of health services, details of visiting doctors, and the ability to search for information based on location and speciality.
Users will also be able to view test results and register as a blood donor.
Mubaraka said, “There are several features that will enhance the patient and user experience. Some of the highlights are the ability to view lab results and appointments, register as a blood donor and access information about active blood donation drives, track vaccination plans for children and view medical evaluation records and related prescriptions, X-rays, lab results, etc.”
The app was developed internally by the Authority, and designed by an external partner.
Of the motion technology concept, still in the early stage of development, Mubaraka said that the Authority is looking at motion sensor technologies to aid various health-care areas, especially physiotherapy.
“Just like how Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensor tracks your entire body, we will be developing various programmes to assist the patient in the comfort of his or her home, starting with rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
“We will also use the motion sensor technology to develop interfaces to provide care for patients with diabetes and hypertension. We are expecting to launch it by Gitex next year,” she said.
In addition to the app, a newly designed DHA web portal, optimised for mobile and tablet usage, will be available in both English and Arabic versions by the end of this year.
In a media statement, the director general of the DHA, Qadi Saeed Al Murooshid said that with evolving technology, health care needs to be tailored differently.
“Our eServices should revolve around the user, empowering them with the tools to make an informed decision for themselves. By merging technology and health, we are enhancing Dubai’s status as a leading hub for world class health care, in line with our strategic goals.”
