Dubai: A jobless man has been jailed for six months for deliberately setting two trucks on fire and causing Dh18,000 worth of damages to the vehicles. Firefighting teams were alerted about two vehicles that were on fire at Dubai Investment Park in August.

Dubai Civil Defence teams extinguished the fire.

Onsite investigations by Dubai Police teams revealed that the fire was a result deliberate arson. Policemen searched the vicinity and apprehended a 23-year-old Pakistani man, who was taken into custody.

During questioning, the suspect, who was drunk, said he had set the two cars on fire with the help of other men who were at large. On Thursday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of deliberately setting the two vehicles on fire.

Presiding judge Habib Awad fined the accused Dh18,000.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty, will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

Records said the 23-year-old Pakistani and other fugitives doused the trucks with benzene, started the fire and caused Dh18,000 in damages to the vehicles that belonged to two transportation companies.

A police corporal said firefighting teams arrived and put out the fire.

“We combed the area and found the defendant nearby. I suspected him because he seemed worried and had a lighter in his hand. He admitted that he had used the lighter to start the fire in collaboration with others,” said the corporal.

The accused admitted to prosecutors that an Indian person had paid him Dh300 to set the vehicles on fire.

The ruling remains subject to appeal.
