What more can a person want when there are sporting and leisure activities all under one roof ? Sharjah Wanderers Sports Club aims to provide many sporting and leisure facilities to its members. It has a very active social calendar as it organises various activities throughout the year.

The club was formed in 1977 but was officially inaugurated in October 1978. The sports facilities, spread out on a wide area, include the gym, football, rugby, hockey, squash, tennis, swimming, darts, snooker and a pool table. Other weekly events are also held at the club.

Vivienne and Tony Dalby are a husband and wife team who have been jointly managing the club for the last 18 months. Speaking of her job at the club, Vivienne says that she is busy all day through but it is like looking after one big family. "The club is buzzing with people every day.

That shows they are fond of coming here. There is a play area with climbing frames and swings. Parents can have a relaxing time while the children play safely," she adds.

The swim club provides swimming training to children on Sunday evenings. "Children learn to build their stamina and also discipline themselves," says Lisa Turner, the swimming coach at the club.

Children can play mini hockey and mini rugby. There are also facilities to train children for other games. The Girl Guide meetings are conducted by volunteers on Tuesday evenings at the club.

Ladies club members meet every first Monday of the month. They usually have a guest speaker addressing them on any topic. On April 8, Beena Waller Walker, a senior physiotherapist from the Welcare Hospital, talked about new techniques used in physiotherapy and the importance of power breathing.

There is a tennis coach to train anybody who wants to learn how to play well. Two swimming teachers give private lessons to outsiders as well.

The club provides salsa lessons and quiz and dart competitions are held twice every month on Monday evenings. There is also a diving association which meets on Tuesday evenings. Diving enthusiasts try and dive most weekends. The diving course is open to non-members as well.

The club's 18-hole golf course is located on the Sharjah Airport Road with its own clubhouse in a delightful desert setting. They have tournaments most weekends.

The website for the golf club is www.Sharjahgolf.com "The club's timings are from 8.00am to12.00pm and the kitchen is open from 9.00am to 11pm daily. "We try to give our members the best we can," says Tony Dalby.
