Abu Dhabi: Emirati fashion designer Mona Al Mansouri has designed a dress inspired by her love for Bu Tinah island in Abu Dhabi.
Mona is a renowned designer and her designs are regularly seen on dignitaries and diplomats as well as local TV presenters.
The unique dress was unveiled at Mona's fashion show on Wednesday at the Abu Dhabi Bride Show, which concluded yesterday, said a statement issued by Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi (EAD).
A testimony to the strength and beauty of nature, Bu Tinah surprises the world with an explosion of life and colour. The island's unique habitat and species include coral reefs, sea turtles and the amazing dugong — a gentle dolphin-like creature that grazes on sea grass. A cousin of the famous manatee that inhabits Florida, the dugong is thought to be the origin of the legend of the mermaid.
Bu Tinah island is nominated to be one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The island was shortlisted among 28 finalists from a list of 447 natural sites around the world, of which 7 will be declared the New 7 Wonders of Nature on November 11, 2011.
EAD had launched an international campaign to encourage people to vote for Bu Tinah island as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The campaign was launched under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of EAD.
Bu Tinah, located around 130km west of Abu Dhabi, is a unique island and a core area of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve - the first marine biosphere reserve in the region.
In spite of the harsh temperatures and salinity, its habitats and species, including mangroves, dolphins and the Socotra cormorant bird, continue to thrive, making the island an important location and living lab for climate change studies.
