Daredevil balloonists Richard Branson and Per Linstrand parachuted from their balloon into the Irish sea just two miles (3.2km) off Scotland after riding the jet-stream more than 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in a record-breaking flight. A spokesman for Branson said both men were picked up from the sea by a Royal Navy ship on standby in the area and flown to the hospital. Minutes after the two abandoned their huge black-and-silver balloon, team member Robin Batchelor, who taught Branson to fly the balloon, said: “It’s been difficult to give a statement because it’s a long way away [from London]. The Royal Air Force station at Prestwick (60 km south-west of Glasgow) has reported that Richard and Per went up to 3,000 feet and chose to parachute out.”
