Dubai: Most of us might not remember the Pippin, an Apple gaming console released in 1996. Pippin was promoted as a network computer that also had the ability to play games.

A poor selection of games (fewer than 20 when the product was released) meant Pippin remains one of the few skeletons in Apple’s closet. But that’s but a blip in Apple’s track record of bringing revolutionary products and technologies into the marketplace.

Now, it has made an entry into the wearable technology market, with the release of Apple Watch, which will work in combination with the two new iPhone models, the 6 and 6 Plus, as well as the iPhone 5S, 5C and 5.

Unlike with most of its other product launches, the Apple Watch is not a singular model, but available in two sizes (38mm and 42mm) and six different models. Even the strap and buckle can be customized as per the owner preferences.

This new model line hewing close to the fashion industry can be attributed to Apple’s Senior Vice-President, Retail and Online Stores, Angela Ahrendts, who was earlier CEO at Burberry.

Apple Watch will be made available to customers at a starting price of $349, which is not really expensive from a premium prspective. But it does beg the question, is it really worth spending $349 for merchandise that could most likely be rendered irrelevant with each successive release? More so, when a Samsung Galaxy Gear watch can function independently without the need of being paired to a phone for just $299?

Sure, Apple Watch is definitely more functional than a regular timepiece. The display for every app has been carefully designed to provide, concise and precise information. Apple Watch assures a new era for app developers.

Limiting our expectation for the Apple Watch from the available information would be a mistake. Apple is reputed for making new updates available with the release of a product, which generally changes the perception and market dynamics entirely. For example, the App store was only launched months after the iTouch.

Much the same could, reasonably enough, be expected of the Apple Watch.
