Downtown venue Dubai Opera, which has just celebrated its second anniversary, has announced a slate of new productions it will welcome to its stage.
Six events have been named, kicking off from the top of November and wrapping up in March of 2019.
On November 1, Comedy Night, in collaboration with Art Canteen’s Arabs Are Not Funny, will return for a second time this year (the first event took place in July). Welsh-Egyptian comedian Omar Hamdi will return, and joining him are Fatiha Al Ghorri, Nabil Abdul Rashid and Maria Shehata. Topics such as dating and Islamophobia will be on the table. Tickets for Comedy Night begin from Dh95.
Meanwhile, on November 17, Lebanese-Armenian composer and pianist Guy Manoukian will perform. The concert will feature his best pieces, as well as select Arabic classics by the likes of Om Kalthoum, Abdul Halim Hafiz, and Zaki Nassif. Tickets begin at Dh175.
Later that month, Montenegrin guitarist Milos Karadaglic will perform. The well-traveled musician will take the stage in Dubai on November 26, performing his new set, The Voice of the Guitar, which reflects on his musical journey. Tickets start from Dh150.
The following night, Welsh-Japanese rock band Feeder will amp up the volume, as they take audiences on a journey through their decades-long career. Feeder, who hit the music scene in 1992, will perform hits such as Buck Rogers, Feeling a Moment and Just the Way I’m Feeling. Tickets start from Dh150.
Multimedia production The Nutcracker and I, by pianist Alexandra Dariescu, will take place the following month on December 12. It’s a new take on a classic story, told through animation, a ballerina, and Dariescu herself on piano. Tickets start from Dh250.
Finally, the BBC Proms 2019 will make a Dubai visit for four days, from March 19-22, with host and BBC Radio 3 presenter Petroc Trelawny leading five concerts toward the Last Night of the Proms. Previously, the BBC Proms came to Dubai in 2017. Tickets start from Dh75 for the first four concerts, and Dh150 for the Last Night of the Proms.
Dubai Opera is also offering backstage tours once a month, starting from September 7, where audiences can visit the auditorium, backstage areas, dressing rooms, piano and trap room and more, with insight given into the venue’s architecture and the production process. Tours start from Dh175 for adults and Dh140 for children between 7 and 16.
The venue will also announce more shows in 2019, including Piaf! The Show, a musical celebration of French chanteuse Edith Piaf; Thriller — Live, direct from the London’s West End, which celebrates The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson; the ballet Sleeping Beauty and the Shakespearean classic, Othello.
