Women are following the latest online trends to prove how thin they are. Chinese women are balancing lipsticks on their collarbones after the challenge was popularised by actress Chen Shu in a video she posted on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website.

Similar to the lipstick challenge, a trend that involves women balancing stacks of coins on their collarbones has also been popular. The theory goes that the thinner you are, the more pronounced your collarbone is and more coins you can fit on top of it.

Another challenge making its way around Chinese social media platform Weibo involves people wrapping earphones around the circumference of their waist to show off how small it is. The earphones waist challenge is just the latest in a long line of similar trends that have emerged over the past decade.

The Toblerone tunnel challenge was another bizarre trend used to prove how skinny one is. The challenge requires women to fit the triangle-shaped chocolate bar between their upper thighs and if they are able to do so, they supposedly have a “Toblerone tunnel”.

The concept of having a ‘thigh gap’ has been long popularised by social media users and ‘Instagram models’. A thigh gap is a space between the inner thighs of some people when standing upright with feet touching.

Another trend that began in China, involves women posting photographs of their waists behind a vertical piece of A4 paper. The waist must be entirely hidden by the paper to successfully complete the challenge. A piece of A4 paper is 8.3 by 11.7 inches.

China’s belly button challenge also trended and got popular among many young female users on Weibo. The trend involves reaching one’s arm around their back, wrapping it around their stomach, and touching their belly button.

However, the majority of social media users are not fond of such bizarre crazes and think that they promote an unhealthy body image. Experts have suggested staying away from body goals that require extreme measures like fad dieting.
